Who should take the Operative CSCS test?

Any workers in a trade that does not require specialist health and safety knowledge. This includes and is not limited to:

  • Bricklayers
  • Carpenters
  • Dry liners

Test format

The CSCS Operative Test lasts 1 hour. In the test there are 50 multiple-choice questions which include 12 behavioural case study and 38 knowledge questions:

  • The 12 behavioural case study questions concern how you should behave on a construction site to ensure health and safety.
  • The 38 knowledge questions check your knowledge of health, safety and environment issues.

The test is completed via a touch screen computer and sat under formal test conditions.

Where to take the test

The CSCS Operative Test can be taken in our accredited Test Centre in Barkingside.


How to prepare

The Health, Safety & Environment Test revision material comes available in two versions - Operative and Managerial and Professional. Both these books include all the questions and answers you could be asked in the test to improve your chances of passing, giving you the perfect head start for the test.

Actual test is in English however available languages using headphones are: Bulgarian, Czech, German, Hungarian, Lithuanian, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Romanian, Russian and Welsh.

Documents to bring

You will need to bring the letter or email confirming your test booking, and valid Proof of Identity that has your photo and signature. Acceptable forms of ID include:

  • Driving licence
  • Passport

 

If you don't have these forms of ID, you can bring an Armed Forces card, foreign driving licence or EU country card with the following items as additional proof of signature:

  • National Insurance card
  • Trade Union card
  • Debit/Credit card
